US readies possible missile strike against Syria

Despite President Obama cautioning against intervention in Syria, the Pentagon is making “initial preparations” for a cruise missile attack on Syrian government forces, according to a new report.

Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey is expected to present options for such a strike at a White House meeting on Saturday, CBS News reported on Friday.

US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel suggested Friday naval forces are moving in position closer to Syria in case Obama chooses action.

“The Defense Department has a responsibility to provide the president with options for contingencies, and that requires positioning our forces, positioning our assets, to be able to carry out different options — whatever options the president might choose,” Hagel said, adding a decision must be made quickly given “there may be another (chemical) attack.”

Meanwhile, a defense official, cited by Reuters, said on Friday the US Navy was expanding its Mediterranean presence with a fourth cruise-missile ship, the USS Mahan. Though the source stressed to Reuters the Navy did not have orders to prepare for military operations against Syria.

The ship was due to head back to the United States, but the commander of the US Sixth Fleet decided to maintain the ship in the region.

All four ships are capable of launching long-range, subsonic cruise missiles to reach land targets.

President Barack Obama is under renewed pressure to take action following the emergence of footage of what appears to be the aftermath of a toxic agent attack in a Damascus suburb on Wednesday. The forces of President Bashar Assad were assaulting a rebel stronghold in the district at the time, but deny responsibility. Moscow, which has maintained close ties with the regime, called the incident a rebel “provocation” possibly designed to derail upcoming Geneva peace talks.

Though the Pentagon will present plans for potential action on Saturday, as CBS reported, President Obama has final say on any further developments.

Questioned on the continuing upheaval in Syria and Egypt during a CNN interview Friday, Obama saidthe United States should be wary of “being drawn into very expensive, difficult, costly interventions that actually breed more resentment in the region.”

Obama went on to express reservations for becoming involved in the 30-month Syrian conflict due to a lack of international consensus.

“If the US goes in and attacks another country without a UN mandate and without clear evidence that can be presented, then there are questions in terms of whether international law supports it, [and] do we have the coalition to make it work?” said Obama.

Despite his cautious tone, Obama’s national security adviser Susan Rice said via Twitter, “What is Bashar al Assad hiding? The world is demanding an independent investigation of Wednesday’s apparent CW attack. Immediately.”

Adding to the rhetoric in Washington, Sen. John McCain said that if the administration was to “let this go on,” it was “writing a blank check to other brutal dictators around the world if they want to use chemical weapons.”

The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee also spoke out in support of a strike in Syria, writing to Obama of the need to respond to the latest alleged outrage.

“If we, in concert with our allies, do not respond to Assad’s murderous uses of weapons of mass destruction, malevolent countries and bad actors around the world will see a green light where one was never intended,” Rep. Eliot Engel wrote on Friday.

Engel has been a proponent of a more aggressive approach to Assad’s government.

“And, we can do this with no boots on the ground, from stand-off distances,” he added in the letter. “I know that your Administration is wrestling with these very complex issues, but I believe that we, as Americans, have a moral obligation to step in without delay and stop the slaughter.”

Obama insisted to CNN that while the United States remains “the one indispensable nation” in international diplomacy, he suggested that perhaps this was one conflict where the world should not look to Washington for a definitive answer.

“The notion that the US can somehow solve what is a sectarian complex problem inside of Syria sometimes is overstated,” said the president.

The White House later released a statement confirming Obama’s words, and emphasizing that the US has no plans to put “boots on the ground.”

Around 3,600 Syrians have been treated for “neurotoxic symptoms”, and 355 of them have died, says the humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

The victims flooded into three Syrian hospitals on the day that hundreds of people were allegedly killed in a “chemical massacre” outside the capital Damascus.

They all arrived within less than three hours of each other, said MSF director of operations Bart Janssens.

He said the pattern of events and reported symptoms “strongly indicate mass exposure to neurotoxic agent”.

“Medical staff working in these facilities provided detailed information to MSF doctors regarding large numbers of patients arriving with symptoms including convulsions, excess saliva, pinpoint pupils, blurred vision and respiratory distress,” he said.

So as you can see, I blog about the whole story, it is just the scene is being played out on an American Stage. It was clear that he was a natural in this role, leaving both his opponents Senator John McCain and Governor Mitt Romney in the rhetorical dust.

Perhaps that is why, even though he won re-election for a second term, he is unwilling to dismantle his campaign apparatus and get into the down and dirty, nitty-gritty work of governing in hard-edged, well-disciplined prose.

Mr Obama’s first term was challenging since he faced a strong Republican opposition intent on stopping his agenda dead in its tracks.

Despite the efforts of the opposition, he was able to pass a piece of hard-fought landmark legislation – Obamacare.

Just as his predecessors have done before him, when things are not going so well at home it’s time to take to the international stage to look “presidential” and refocus on the agenda.

It seems that Mr Obama had hoped his trip to the G8 and Germany would give him just that opportunity.

Last week he was at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on the eve of the 50th Anniversary of JFK’s famous speech to re-capture some of the magic of his 2008 campaign.

This time the president spoke before a much smaller, invited gathering.

Long gone were the “rock star” awaiting throng of hundreds of thousands that he so easily captivated just five years ago.

Realistically, expectations were not so high this time around and this Nobel Peace Prize winner’s only competition last week was not JFK or Ronald Reagan but Barack Obama himself.

Mr Obama has now governed for several years and the times have certainly changed.

The weight of real world problems that he has had to face may have eaten away at the idealistic hope his supporters had for him and his administration.

Optimism and idealism for “Hope and Change” seem to have given way to the hard, cold realities of the toughest job in the world.

Mr Obama has not only been facing a tough domestic opposition but he has also had to come face to face with the severe challenges on the international stage and they visibly taken their toll.

As Congress tries to wrap up some of its important legislation before the July 4 recess, the president and his family are headed for a week-long visit to Africa.

The Senate Immigration Reform Bill is front and centre, and the passage of this piece of historic legislation might need a bit of the president’s encouragement.

If passed, this is likely to be the most important piece of legislation passed in his second term.

At the same time he could also be facing the most the challenging crisis of his presidency.

The “Snowden Crisis” has put the Obama administration’s intelligence-gathering policies in jeopardy, under the public microscope, and has once again eroded the precious trust between the US government and the American people.

How Mr Obama deals with this crisis of trust and how he finds his voice to regain that trust and confidence on this issue could determine his legacy.

Most US citizens are torn. They are uncomfortable with the government having unfettered access to their private communications. At the same time, they understand the government must “snoop” to some extent, when legally justified, to keep them safe.

They also cannot understand how someone like Edward Snowden, an outside contractor, was given access to our top secrets and able to disclose them with such ease.

• What will the fallout be in US relations with China, Russia and the ultimate country that agrees to give Mr Snowden asylum?

At LAST! Some real coverage, some real truths, some real debate over the constitution, some real reporting, and questions with depth to them. I may be from Scotland, UK but the actual truth of the matter is, when America sneezes, we all get a cold over here, when America gets ill, we all get ill. Some are caused by karst processes—for example, the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks or suffosion processes in sandstone. Others are formed as a result of the collapse of old mine workings close to the surface.
Sinkholes may vary in size from 1 to 600 m (3.3 to 2,000 ft) both in diameter and depth, and vary in form from soil-lined bowls to bedrock-edged chasms. Sinkholes may be formed gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide. The different terms for sinkholes are often used interchangeably.

These things are happening worldwide, they can be explained away by erosion or water getting in-between layers, but this would be plausible if say 10 or 20 happened, to date over 500 have happened all over the World, mainly the Americas North and South over the last three years, some are a few feet in size and go 300 feet down, some are 200 yards wide and go a mile deep, and all in-between. This has science and the like’s puzzles. When an event happens, you deal with it, when it happens hundreds of times in a short space of time, there has to be an equal sign (=) at the end of the question, here there is not, so what is causing holes to swallow up cars, homes and people World Wide?

Chinese hackers access major USA weapons systems as $6 Billion US Scam is Busted!!

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Thousands of confidential files on the U.S. military’s most technologically advanced fighter aircraft have been compromised by unknown computer hackers over the past two years, according to senior defense officials. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/US/04/21/pentagon.hacked/

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter’s self-diagnostic system was compromised by hackers, officials say.

The Internet intruders were able to gain access to data related to the design and electronics systems of the Joint Strike Fighter through computers of Pentagon contractors in charge of designing and building the aircraft, according to the officials, who did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.

In addition to files relating to the aircraft, hackers gained entry into the Air Force’s air traffic control systems, according to the officials. Once they got in, the Internet hackers were able to see such information as the locations of U.S. military aircraft in flight.

The Joint Striker Fighter plane is the military’s new F-35 Lightning II. It designed to become the aircraft used by all of the branches of service.

Most of the files broken into focused on the design and performance statistics of the fighter, as well as its electronic systems, officials said. The information could be used to make the plane easier to fight or defend against.

Additionally, the system used by the aircraft to conduct self-diagnostics during flight was compromised by the computer intrusions, according to the officials.

However, the officials insisted that none of the information accessed was highly sensitive data.

The plane uses stealth and other highly sensitive electronic equipment, but it does not appear that information on those systems was compromised, because it is stored on computers that are not connected to the Internet, according to the defense officials.

Lockheed Martin’s chief financial officer denied that there was any breach of classified information, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

“The U.S. government doesn’t talk a whole lot about this, and neither do we. But in response to the [Wall Street Journal] report, we think it’s incorrect,” said Bruce Tanner of Lockheed Martin. “There’s never been any effective attack. We have measures in place, and there’s never been a successful attack.”

In a statement released later, the company reiterated its position that no classified information had been accessed.

“To our knowledge, there has never been any classified information breach. Like the government, we have attacks on our systems continually and have stringent measures in place to detect and stop attacks,” the statement said.

The operators of digital currency exchange Liberty Reserve have been accused of helping international criminals launder more than $6bn (£3.9bn) in illicit funds.

US prosecutors allege the funds are linked to everything from child pornography to software for hacking into banks.

An indictment unsealed on Tuesday said Liberty Reserve had more than a million users worldwide, and virtually all of its business was related to criminal activity.

Attorney Preet Bharara said it was “perhaps the largest international money-laundering case ever brought by the United States”.

“Liberty Reserve has emerged as one of the principal means by which cyber-criminals around the world distribute, store and launder the proceeds of their illegal activity,” according to the indictment filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Officials in Spain, Costa Rica and New York arrested five people, including the company’s founder, Arthur Budovsky.

International authorities have also seized bank accounts and internet domains associated with Liberty Reserve.

The indictment details a system of payments that allowed users to open accounts under false names with blatant monikers like “Russia Hackers” and “Hacker Account”.

The use of digital currency has expanded in the past decade, attracting users ranging from video gamers looking for ways to buy and sell virtual goods to those who lack faith in the traditional banking system.

Touted by some investors as the future of money, these virtual currencies have gained the attention of US regulators looking to bring them under anti-money laundering rules.

The US Treasury says it named Liberty Reserve under the USA Patriot Act as it had been “specifically designed and frequently used to facilitate money-laundering in cyber space”.

That designation, a first against a virtual currency exchange, prohibits banks or other payment processors from doing business with Liberty Reserve, even under a new name.

The Treasury also says Liberty Reserve’s virtual currency was used to anonymously buy and sell software designed to steal personal information and attack financial institutions.

Liberty Reserve, with around 12 million transactions per year, laundered over $6bn in criminal proceeds since it began operating in 2006, the indictment said.

Only in the last few weeks have we seen what could be the first shots of WWIII for real. I believe WWIII is already happening, I think it is a Cyber War, the World has moved on, wars are no longer always fought in a trench they are fought through cyber space. The bombs sent from Israel last week, if you believe a Cyber War is happening, it could be believed that the bombs did indeed get launched from Israel, but did Israel fire? I don’t think so. One of the best news sources I watch is Aljazeera England news (Just read and told in English), it tells the truth more than the main stream media like Fox, CNN, SKY and the BBC, I am not saying it is perfect, but unless you have watched it, you won’t know.

I look at the world right now and I NEVER take sides, Syria SEEM to be doing wrong, but look back to Iraq, we all went to War there on a lie, look to Libya, Gaddafi did more for the people of that country that he is given credit for.
