Blogger gets visit from cops for Googling “pressure cookers” and “backpacks?”

THIS IS A WARNING TO US ALL!

This story got a lot of buzz on the Internets today, as it seemed to suggest that the dragnetting of America’s phone metadata and browsing habits via Prism by NSA might be resulting in young couples with simultaneous interests in new pressure cookers and backpacking were being raided by armed law enforcement.

The blogger in question is Michele Catalano, who some of you may remember from her blog, “A Small Victory,” on which she wrote during the mid-2000s. As the story evolved throughout the day, police released a statement clarifying that it wasn’t NSA’s dragnetting that got her family ensnared but the “see something say something” impulse of an employer on whose computer the above Googling occurred.

Here is Catalano’s account of her experience, which she theorized had something to do with her family’s Googling habits, based on the questioning her husband got. Read the whole thing because she’s a good writer:

What happened was this: At about 9:00 am, my husband, who happened to be home yesterday, was sitting in the living room with our two dogs when he heard a couple of cars pull up outside. He looked out the window and saw three black SUVs in front of our house; two at the curb in front and one pulled up behind my husband’s Jeep in the driveway, as if to block him from leaving.

Six gentleman in casual clothes emerged from the vehicles and spread out as they walked toward the house, two toward the backyard on one side, two on the other side, two toward the front door.

A million things went through my husband’s head. None of which were right. He walked outside and the men greeted him by flashing badges. He could see they all had guns holstered in their waistbands.

“Are you [name redacted]?” one asked while glancing at a clipboard. He affirmed that was indeed him, and was asked if they could come in. Sure, he said.

They asked if they could search the house, though it turned out to be just a cursory search. They walked around the living room, studied the books on the shelf (nope, no bomb making books, no Anarchist Cookbook), looked at all our pictures, glanced into our bedroom, pet our dogs. They asked if they could go in my son’s bedroom but when my husband said my son was sleeping in there, they let it be.

Meanwhile, they were peppering my husband with questions. Where is he from? Where are his parents from? They asked about me, where was I, where do I work, where do my parents live. Do you have any bombs, they asked. Do you own a pressure cooker? My husband said no, but we have a rice cooker. Can you make a bomb with that? My husband said no, my wife uses it to make quinoa. What the hell is quinoa, they asked.

They searched the backyard. They walked around the garage, as much as one could walk around a garage strewn with yardworking equipment and various junk. They went back in the house and asked more questions.

Have you ever looked up how to make a pressure cooker bomb? My husband, ever the oppositional kind, asked them if they themselves weren’t curious as to how a pressure cooker bomb works, if they ever looked it up. Two of them admitted they did.

So more freedoms are being taken, people google certain words and phrases and the cops are at the door. Does this make you feel safe as it may have been a terrorist or unsafe as you ALL KNOW now you are being spied on. US government pays at least £100m to the UK spy agency

The US government has paid at least £100m to the UK spy agency GCHQ over the last three years, according to documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden.

The payments were made to secure access to Britain’s intelligence gathering programmes, according to the documents viewed by The Guardian newspaper.

The revelations have emerged after Snowden was granted a year’s asylum in Russia following more than a month inside an airport terminal.

The fugitive left Moscow airport in a taxi, although his intended destination was not clear. The US said it was “extremely disappointed” by Russia’s decision.

The payments to GCHQ are set out in the latest cache of leaked documents which make clear that the Americans expect a return on the investment.

“GCHQ must pull its weight and be seen to pull its weight,” a GCHQ strategy briefing, reported in The Guardian, insisted.

Snowden’s supporters say he has a right to freedom of speech

The funding highlights the close relationship between GCHQ and America’s National Security Agency (NSA) and raises fears about Washington’s hold over the British agency.

In another document from 2010, GCHQ acknowledges that the US had “raised a number of issues with regards to meeting NSA’s minimum expectations”.

It said GCHQ “still remains short of the full NSA ask”. Ministers have denied that GCHQ does the NSA’s “dirty work”.

Snowden, a former NSA contractor who is wanted by the US on espionage charges, has in the past warned about the relationship between the two agencies.

He said the organisations have been jointly responsible for developing techniques that allow the mass harvesting and analysis of internet traffic.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says the US is ‘disappointed’ by Russia

The Guardian also reports on indications that GCHQ is pouring money into efforts to gather personal information from mobile phones and apps.

According to one document, GCHQ wants to be able to “exploit any phone, anywhere, any time”.

The details of the NSA payments are set out in GCHQ’s annual “investment portfolios”.

Payments include £17.2m for the agency’s Mastering the Internet project, which gathers and stores vast amounts of “raw” information ready for analysis.

Asked about the payments, a Cabinet Office spokesman told The Guardian: “In a 60-year alliance it is entirely unsurprising that there are joint projects in which resources and expertise are pooled, but the benefits flow in both directions.”

A senior security source in Whitehall added: “The fact is there is a close intelligence relationship between the UK and US and a number of other countries including Australia and Canada.”

Snowden’s asylum in Russia was met by anger from the US.

“We are extremely disappointed that the Russian government would take this step despite our very clear and lawful requests in public and private that Mr Snowden be expelled and returned to the United States,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said.

Mr Carney said Moscow’s decision undermined US-Russian law enforcement cooperation that had improved since two ethnic Chechens were blamed for the Boston Marathon bombings.

American officials will make contact with their Russian counterparts, Mr Carney said, but he refused to explain any diplomatic repercussions for Moscow.

(Reuters) – A U.N. Security Council committee is split over whether Iran’s missile tests last year violated U.N. sanctions imposed on Tehran because of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, Australia’s U.N. envoy said on Monday.

That division effectively rules out any expansion of sanctions against Tehran over the tests for the time being, U.N. envoys said on condition of anonymity.

Diplomats said it was Russia, backed by China that refused to declare Tehran’s missile launches a violation of the U.N. restrictions, as a U.N. Panel of Experts on Iran said was the case.

The rift on the Iran sanctions committee, which consists of all 15 Security Council members, highlights the difficulties Western powers face in persuading Russia and China to join them in keeping up the pressure on Tehran to halt banned nuclear and missile work.

The Department of Justice’s Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation continue to evaluate the evidence generated during the federal investigation, as well as the evidence and testimony from the state trial. Experienced federal prosecutors will determine whether the evidence reveals a prosecutable violation of any of the limited federal criminal civil rights statutes within our jurisdiction, and whether federal prosecution is appropriate in accordance with the Department’s policy governing successive federal prosecution following a state trial.

A Warning to the USA from History, as the end gets nearer

Please read this all Members. I don’t know why some people can’t see the writing on the wall, It is so clear what is happening across our nation and it affects all of us, our children and our family. We owe it ourselves and those that we love to take a very hard look at where we live, those who govern it and the direction it is heading and ask ourselves what we as a nation are becoming.

The United States government is beyond rogue at this point. Our government is actively engaged in criminal activity and telling us that it’s just too bad, that’s how it goes even when the said criminal activity is broadcast on their own media.

They don’t deny ignoring the constitution, the fourth amendment, acknowledge they are spying on us in violation of law and all people are talking about is Edward Snowden and not who is going to jail for authorizing that decision.

We supply military aid, equipment and funding to the tunes of billions of dollars a year to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, a known and dangerous terrorist organization, the same people our government is raping our rights to “protect” us from. Purge all records of the Bin Laden raid from the Pentagon and away from ever finding out the truth, much like the Pentagon video footage from 9/11 and the Sandy Hook video footage that exposes the lies. 

They commit Fast and Furious with the proven agenda of compromising our second amendment rights, lie to the entire nation and stonewall anyone who asks for answers and no one is punished. They further lead an assault on our second amendment in every way possible AFTER they commit this act and are caught and yet still Americans insist there would never be a need to defend our liberty against tyranny.

They continue to erode our rights to speech, our rights to free press, our fourth amendment rights and meet any opposition with increasing brutality, intimidation and force to make an example of any person or any group that challenges their ever increasing authoritarian control.

This is NOT the United States government I want nor the one I trust or will swear my allegiance too. I am an American, I am American by my birth right on this soil and the history of my forefathers who fought to ensure that I and my children would be free, free to enjoy liberty and the pursuit of happiness without the burden of a totalitarian, oppressive and hostile government and I will ensure to the best of my ability until my death that I honour that responsibility as a citizen of this great nation.

Self serving laws bread by corporate greed and lusting for money and power have brought this county to it’s knees and even Eric Holder has admitted that the big banks, the corporations, the ones that control the true power to change our laws, our economy and our way of life are too big for our government in it’s current form to prosecute. The corporations and banks have become and ARE the government.

In the meantime, we have swat teams, helicopters and armoured vehicles actively blocking entire city blocks and arresting Adam Kokesh for a victimless crime, a crime that shouldn’t be honoured because the supreme court has struck the “law” down. Yet, you and I, the tax payer can flip the bill for this, for needless wars, for drone striking women and children but you couldn’t take a White House tour if you wanted too.

Our king, Obama is too busy taking vacation after vacation, golfing and going on state wide tours at the cost of billions of dollars to us to notice how intensely the problems have now become, he, this administration along with most in our government are content to continue to escalate the problems because they know it is so far out of control that there can be no reigning in of the corruption, the horse is out of the gate. To admit the system is illegitimate is to admit that they are as well and power will never implode upon itself.

This madness will not end until we act, it will not end until every American is touched by the greed, the corruption, the fear and the brutality of this government, it will not end until we put a stop to it. Take a look around, you live in a box, a prison, a prison of laws meant to allow those that rule over you to dictate everything you do less they label you as a certain word, terrorist…….. They will take all of your rights, all that you have and make an example of you to scare anyone else who would expose the criminals they are.

Terrorism, was created because of a guilty conscious, the government knew that they could not maintain the dollar standard for oil and world economic control unless they abandoned the principles and morals this country was built upon and they also knew that Americans would display disent for these unjust actions and they had to devise a plan to ensure that domestic uprising would not become an issue in the face of these crimes against humanity.

This way of thinking is what created the blind eye to 9/11 and what led to the Patriot Act which I am completely sure had already been drafted and awaiting implementation and which has been furthered and expanded upon by the Obama administration. This country has been taken over, it has been infiltrated, secured and is now operating by those that have been put in place directly by money provided from special interests. The continuation, expansion and gross conflict of ideals of American society that these “terrorism” laws are being implemented are only serving one purpose and it is one of enslavement to the American citizen.

Research Nazi Germany, research how they enacted laws to neutralize the public before they assaulted the entire world under an iron fist. We are tearing a page out of the history books with this government only we are doing it with a new enemy and by doing so, they are confusing you into not recognizing the similarities.

In parting, a truly free, democratic based society, a republic……… Has laws. Those laws apply to everyone because the government, it’s agents and contractors are nothing more than public servants who as the framers had envisioned serve the people because they are from the people. We do not have that. The government in it’s current state recognizes no laws, breaks them with impunity and arrogance and assaults those who would speak out in one form or the other.

There is no accountability in our government, no regresses to crimes committed, no action is taken when they blatantly cross the line outside of lawsuits that when if they are ultimately found guilty WE have to pay with our tax dollars. It’a a kangaroo government led by an agenda straight out of 1984 and all I can say is that George Orwell would have said……….

So as you can see, I blog about the whole story, it is just the scene is being played out on an American Stage. Perhaps that is why, even though he won re-election for a second term, he is unwilling to dismantle his campaign apparatus and get into the down and dirty, nitty-gritty work of governing in hard-edged, well-disciplined prose.

Mr Obama’s first term was challenging since he faced a strong Republican opposition intent on stopping his agenda dead in its tracks.

Despite the efforts of the opposition, he was able to pass a piece of hard-fought landmark legislation – Obamacare.

Just as his predecessors have done before him, when things are not going so well at home it’s time to take to the international stage to look “presidential” and refocus on the agenda.

It seems that Mr Obama had hoped his trip to the G8 and Germany would give him just that opportunity.

Last week he was at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on the eve of the 50th Anniversary of JFK’s famous speech to re-capture some of the magic of his 2008 campaign.

This time the president spoke before a much smaller, invited gathering.

Long gone were the “rock star” awaiting throng of hundreds of thousands that he so easily captivated just five years ago.

Realistically, expectations were not so high this time around and this Nobel Peace Prize winner’s only competition last week was not JFK or Ronald Reagan but Barack Obama himself.

Mr Obama has now governed for several years and the times have certainly changed.

The weight of real world problems that he has had to face may have eaten away at the idealistic hope his supporters had for him and his administration.

Optimism and idealism for “Hope and Change” seem to have given way to the hard, cold realities of the toughest job in the world.

Mr Obama has not only been facing a tough domestic opposition but he has also had to come face to face with the severe challenges on the international stage and they visibly taken their toll.

As Congress tries to wrap up some of its important legislation before the July 4 recess, the president and his family are headed for a week-long visit to Africa.

The Senate Immigration Reform Bill is front and centre, and the passage of this piece of historic legislation might need a bit of the president’s encouragement.

If passed, this is likely to be the most important piece of legislation passed in his second term.

At the same time he could also be facing the most the challenging crisis of his presidency.

The “Snowden Crisis” has put the Obama administration’s intelligence-gathering policies in jeopardy, under the public microscope, and has once again eroded the precious trust between the US government and the American people.

How Mr Obama deals with this crisis of trust and how he finds his voice to regain that trust and confidence on this issue could determine his legacy.

Most US citizens are torn. They are uncomfortable with the government having unfettered access to their private communications. At the same time, they understand the government must “snoop” to some extent, when legally justified, to keep them safe.

• This crisis leaves us with some very tough questions ahead:
• What role does journalism play here when it comes to national security?
• Is it within the Freedom of the Press to publish a story like this one worth the price we pay in loss of security?
• Is there a way for an individual to challenge alleged government abuse or wrongdoing without damaging national security?
• What will the fallout be in US relations with China, Russia and the ultimate country that agrees to give Mr Snowden asylum?
• Is WikiLeaks a journalistic endeavour or an enemy of the state?
• Should such sensitive work be done by independent contractors like Booz Allen, or is this a job for full-time government employees or members of the military who swear an oath of allegiance to uphold the US Constitution and take it seriously?
• How much transparency is necessary when it comes to government intelligence programmes designed to protect the “homeland”?
• How much congressional and judicial oversight is enough, and how much is too much?
• And perhaps the toughest question: How much liberty are Americans willing to give up in the name of safety in the electronic, social media, information age?

The “Snowden Crisis” is likely to test the limits of both the president and the American people on these questions and on their desire to maintain their constitutional freedoms.

At LAST! Some real coverage, some real truths, some real debate over the constitution, some real reporting, and questions with depth to them. Many including myself have blogged fairly hard about the American foreign policy and homeland situation. I may be from Scotland, UK but the actual truth of the matter is, when America sneezes, we all get a cold over here, when America gets ill, we all get ill. The market crash worldwide came on the back of the USA Market crash. I don’t think some in America truly realise the impact every decision, every move, every lie has on the World, the same World ALL our kids grow up in. The USA have had terrible time abroad with relations with China and Russia sinking to an all time low. With China now being the new financial superpower AND buying up land in the USA we enter a crucial time for the people of this Generation, and a time that can and probably will shape the World for generations to come with many issues being at hand that the American Government have backed themselves into a corner with.

America is no longer the beacon of freedom it once was, it is not as resolute as it once was, the American Dream has died, the USA is a dying nation. I know Many do not want to hear this, read this nor accept this. I got called an “American Basher” by an IDIOT on here who I blocked within minutes of it being said. I love the people of the USA, most of the people I follow are from the USA, real friends, they are as worried if not more worried than I am about what could happen due to the events in the 12 blogs I have done out of nearly 800 about the USA and other countries that can and will and could at any second harm the USA, the USA has no money, never has there been a time when the USA has been as wide open to attack in ANY form. I pray and hope I am wrong, but sadly, when you have a quick glance or a good read of the FACTS I have added to the blogs above, anyone with even the smallest brain and ability to realise the USA is NOT the WORLD and is in-fact a nation on its knees with a people who are asking more each day about lies, a nation who are beginning to starve, it is slowly happening. If you are American you SHOULD know a bill was passed a few weeks ago to slash Billions of Dollars from the Food Stamp programme. This is the beginning of the end for what I see as the new Roman Empire. History repeats and people who are smart enough to connect the dots and clever enough to join them together will know what I am saying, in-fact I know many do realise my words are real here, I speak to many and am part of several sites, one the biggest there is, where most from the USA realise this is End Game. French president threatens to block EU trade negotiations with the US amid bugging scandal

 

Keep this short, this is getting worse, brace for ‘ye old impact people. This is bad

 

French President Francois Hollande has said allegations that the US bugged European embassies could threaten a huge planned EU-US trade deal.

He said there could be no negotiations without guarantees that spying would stop “immediately”.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said he did not know the truth of the claims but sought to down play them.

Meanwhile, Russian and US security agencies are reportedly discussing how to deal with the man behind the leaks.

Former CIA-analyst Edward Snowden is believed to be at an airport in Moscow, seeking a destination safe from the US where he is wanted for prosecution over the leaking of thousands of classified documents.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and US’s President Barack Obama have ordered the chiefs of their respective agencies, FSB and FBI, to find a way out of the impasse, a senior Russian official said.

‘Disturbing news’

The allegations that US security services bugged EU missions and the embassies of friendly European countries – including the French, Italian and Greek embassies – were published at the weekend by Der Spiegel in Germany and the Guardian in Britain.
